Nepal’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution continues to gain momentum as the country now boasts 1,250 charging stations nationwide, supported by growing private investment and government facilitation. With increasing public preference for electric mobility, the expansion marks a major milestone in Nepal’s transition toward a sustainable transport system.

According to Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) spokesperson Rajan Dhakal, the authority has built 63 charging stations, while the remaining have been developed by private companies. He added that around 100 more stations are under construction, with NEA providing technical and financial support such as free transformers and transmission lines for interested private investors.

“Private companies are the real drivers of EV infrastructure. NEA’s role is primarily promotional and supportive,” said Dhakal, noting that the authority contributes between Rs 2 million and Rs 4 million per station and installs up to 200 kVA transformers and 1 km power lines free of cost.

Major automobile groups are taking the lead in the EV infrastructure boom. Tata Motors operates 186 charging stations across Nepal, including 150 AC fast chargers and 36 DC stations, ensuring connectivity from Birtamod to Dhangadhi. Similarly, CG Motors has already set up 300 stations and plans to add 50 more, while Hyundai’s official distributor, Laxmi Intercontinental, has developed 64 stations and plans to expand further.

BYD, MAW Vriddhi, and a joint venture between Golchha Group and Sharda Group have also joined the race. The Golchha-Sharda collaboration has established more than 30 charging points, including one at Lomanthang, Mustang - Nepal’s highest-altitude EV charging station.

Industry experts highlight that although EV adoption is growing rapidly, the current infrastructure is still insufficient on major highways, calling for greater public-private collaboration. With rising electricity availability and lower maintenance costs, analysts believe Nepal is on track to become a regional leader in clean and affordable mobility.
