The Mustang Customs Office at Nhechung in Lomanthang Rural Municipality-1 has collected more than Rs 6.66 billion in customs revenue as of May 30.

The revenue was generated from imports and exports through the Nepal-China Korala border point, which has been operating fully since September 16 last year.

According to Customs Chief Bidur Chundal, customs duties worth Rs 13.87 billion were collected from goods imported from China through the Korala crossing. The imports included electric vehicles (EVs), festival-related garments, cosmetics, electronic goods and other merchandise.

Exports from Nepal to China through the same border generated customs revenue of Rs 205.57 million. Handicrafts and other Nepali products were among the items exported.

The Mustang Customs Office reported that 2,997 electric vehicles entered Nepal through the Korala border between mid-September and May 30. Imports of EVs alone generated Rs 6.76 billion in customs revenue.

In recent weeks, the import process for EVs entering through the Korala crossing has come under scrutiny. Although customs clearance has already been completed for 649 electric vehicles imported through the route, the government has launched an investigation into the process.

A three-member committee has been formed to determine whether any irregularities occurred in the import procedure. The committee has already completed inspections of EVs seized by the Armed Police Force in Hemja of Kaski, Kushma of Parbat, Jomsom and the Korala border point in Mustang.
