Following a rise in complaints over frequent power outages and recurring voltage interruptions in eastern Nepal, the senior leadership of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has visited Morang and Sunsari districts to assess the situation. The NEA said it has begun on-site inspections of the distribution system and under-construction infrastructure to improve the quality, reliability, and continuity of electricity supply.

After receiving widespread public complaints about increasing power disruptions in Biratnagar and other parts of eastern Nepal, Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha directed the NEA leadership to take the necessary measures to resolve the problem. In line with the minister’s instruction, an NEA team led by Acting Managing Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha and Deputy Managing Director Rajan Dhakal, who heads the Distribution and Consumer Services Directorate, has traveled to eastern Nepal to conduct field inspections.

The NEA team also held discussions with the heads of the Provincial Office and distribution branches from Morang, Sunsari, and other districts on the current state of electricity supply, existing challenges, and possible solutions. According to the NEA, a meeting with the chiefs of 24 offices and service centers under the Provincial Office was also held, during which directives were issued to improve the effectiveness of service delivery.

During the inspection, the team visited the transformer repair workshop in Duhabi and assessed the condition of the Duhabi Substation under the Duhabi Grid Division. The concerned authorities were instructed to expedite the necessary preparations.

Similarly, employees and the construction contractor have been directed to complete the 132 kV Barju Substation in Sunsari within the next three months. The NEA also instructed that construction of the Kerabari (Kerang) Substation in Morang be accelerated under a detailed work schedule, with a target of completing the project within one month.

According to the NEA, both substations are strategically important for enhancing the reliability of electricity supply in eastern Nepal. The construction company has been instructed to mobilize adequate manpower and coordinate closely with NEA officials to ensure the projects are completed within the stipulated timeframe.

The NEA added that inspections of other ongoing projects, regional offices, and distribution branches across eastern Nepal are also continuing.
