India has launched a 1 MW green hydrogen power plant at Kandla Port, Gujarat, advancing its commitment to sustainable maritime infrastructure. Developed by the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), the facility was inaugurated by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal. The plant is a key component of a planned 10 MW green hydrogen project, aligning with India’s clean energy goals.

Sonowal praised the initiative as a significant milestone, stating: “DPA has turned that vision into reality, a shining example of speed, scale, and skill under Maritime India Vision 2030.” He highlighted the rapid progress since the foundation stone for the 10 MW plant was laid in May 2025, noting the 1 MW module’s role in setting a standard for India’s green hydrogen development. The minister congratulated DPA and Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the Indian conglomerate responsible for the project’s execution, saying: “I commend the entire team of Deendayal Port Authority, led by the Chairman, and appreciate the engineers of L&T for delivering this complex project with remarkable speed and precision.”

The plant is expected to produce approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually, supporting efforts to reduce carbon emissions in maritime operations. Its implementation underscores India’s focus on integrating clean energy into port activities, enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency.

Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shantanu Thakur, also commended the project, stating: “The commissioning of this Green Hydrogen plant at DPA highlights India’s growing leadership in clean energy, innovation, and self-reliance. I congratulate the entire team for taking this bold step towards a sustainable maritime future.” The facility is seen as a model for future clean energy initiatives in India’s port sector.

In related developments, Kandla Port has undergone significant infrastructure upgrades. Earlier in 2025, Sonowal announced two projects worth INR 570 billion ($6.6 billion) to enhance the port’s capacity. These initiatives aim to improve efficiency in handling dry and liquid cargo, reduce vessel turnaround times, and create employment opportunities, contributing to regional economic growth.

The 1 MW green hydrogen plant at Kandla Port represents a practical step toward cleaner energy adoption in India’s maritime sector. By combining innovative technology with strategic infrastructure investments, the DPA is positioning Kandla as a hub for sustainable port operations and economic development.
