GRIPS 2 Highlights Clean Energy and AI for Nepal

Solar, Battery Storage, and AI were discussed as potential tools to support Nepal's energy future during the Grid Resilience through Intelligent Photovoltaic Storage, Phase 2 (GRIPS 2 ) roundtable at Kathmandu Guest House in Thamel. The event, organized by Gham Power in partnership with Businesspana, focused on the role of solar power, battery storage systems, and artificial intelligence in enhancing Nepal's energy system, whichis currently reliant on hydropower.

The discussions highlighted the challenges of seasonal variations in electricity generation and the potential of solar energy to mitigate energy shortages during dry seasons. Gham Power CEO Anjal Niraula emphasized the need to reimagine Nepal's energy future and explore integrated renewable energy solutions to improve industrial reliability and long-term energy resilience. Rooftop solar systems were identified as a practical and efficient solution that could be implemented more quickly than traditional hydropower projects.

The conversation also delved into Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which store electricity generated during peak periods and distribute it during times of lower production or higher demand. Niraula mentioned that combining battery storage with solar power can enhance energy reliability even after sunset.

The talk also touched upon the utilization of artificial intelligence and software-based optimization tools for energy system management. The discussion highlighted how AI can aid in energy planning by analyzing factors such as electricity rates, weather predictions, battery efficiency, and dispatch cycles to enhance energy distribution decisions.

As part of the presentation, the organizers referenced an industrial implementation within the GRIPS project in partnership with Laxmi Steel, showcasing how renewable integration and battery storage could bolster industrial energy optimization, potentially cutting operational costs and enhancing energy efficiency.

During the Q&A session, participants brought up concerns about battery recycling and sustainability. The organizers assured that manufacturers would be responsible for battery recycling through collection and recovery systems post-use.

Niraula stressed that solar energy was not being positioned as a substitute for hydropower but as part of a holistic approach where different energy sources complement each other based on seasonal and operational requirements.

"We are currently in an energy transition phase," stated Sudeep Tuladhar, COO of Gham Power, underscoring the importance of diversified and adaptable energy systems as Nepal prepares for future energy needs.

Nepal’s industrial energy needs are rapidly evolving. It is no longer just about accessing electricity; it’s about ensuring power that is reliable, resilient and sustainable. Frequent grid outages and reliance on costly diesel generators underscore the urgent need for more efficient solutions.

That’s where GRIPS2 (Grid Resilience through Intelligent Photovoltaic Storage, Phase 2) comes in. Developed through a collaboration between Gham Power, Practical Action and Swanbarton, GRIPS2 introduces Nepal’s one-of-a-kind battery-based microgrid, a game-changing step toward industrial decarbonisation and sustainable growth.

According to organizer, the industrial sector in Nepal is responsible for approximately 40% of the country's carbon emissions. Despite the majority of electricity being generated from renewable sources like hydropower, frequent power outages due to distribution challenges force industries to rely on diesel generators, leading to increased costs and emissions.

GRIPS2 offers a more efficient solution. By integrating solar PV, advanced battery storage, and AI-powered control systems, it provides clean, cost-effective, and uninterrupted energy, enabling industries to reduce expenses while meeting sustainability targets.

“More than just a product, GRIPS2 is a comprehensive smart energy platform designed to revolutionize how Nepalese industries manage their power needs. By enhancing reliability, cost-efficiency, and environmental sustainability, it empowers industries with intelligent tools and solutions to adapt and thrive in the ever-changing energy sector,” argued Tuladhar.
